I'm having trouble finding information about this on the web. I have a SAS
backplane with redundant expanders designed so you can use redundant SAS
controllers. Seems obvious to me that the drivers need to support two cards
pointing to the same drives. Does this work in FreeBSD? Does it matter
which HBAs I buy?

The closest thing to what you want is gmultipath:
